Creating a safety plan.

What's a safety plan? It's a personal emergency plan that helps keep you safe from your partner, during or after the relationship.

Starting a safety plan? Here’s a quick guide to get you thinking about it.

Staying Safe in the Relationship

  • Memorize important phone numbers by heart.

  • Hide emergency cash, keys, clothes, and important papers somewhere safe.

  • Find the safest spots in your house, with no weapons and easy exits.

  • Always have your cell phone and keep it charged.

  • Work out a help signal with friends or neighbors.

  • Practice a quick escape from your home.

Stay Safe After Leaving

  • Change your locks and increase home security.

  • Let your kids' caregivers know who can pick them up.

  • Keep a protective order with you.

  • Use a P.O. box or a friend's place for mail.

  • Tell your work about the situation for safety at the job.

  • Stay away from old hangouts.

Internet and Tech Safety

  • Use public computers for private searches.

  • Start a new email for confidential talks.

  • Get a separate pay-as-you-go phone.

  • Tighten up your social media privacy and keep passwords secret.

  • Share less personal info online to avoid being tracked.
